Did You know Why Your Dad and Mum Should USE LINUX???????
It’s no secret that tech-savvy computer users typically become the
go-to guy for all technical help in their circles. More specifically,
Mom and Dad tend to always ask us for help with their computers. If
you’re tired of the phone calls
from Mom and Dad complaining on how sloooww their computer has become,
how fast it used to be, how many pop-ups there are, etc., spending hours
upon hours fixing and repairing, re-installing and scanning, then this
post should convince you with 5 reasons why your parents should use
Linux.
Windows: Internet Explorer
Linux: Mozilla Firefox
Windows: MS Outlook
Linux: Mozilla Thunderbird or Evolution
Windows: Solitaire
Linux: AisleRiot Solitaire
Windows: ITunes
Linux: Banshee or Amarok
Windows: MS Word
Linux: OpenOffice.org
Step 2. Burn the ISO image to a CD-R.
Step 3. Bring the CD-R to your parents house.
Step 4. Back up any necessary files on your parents computer.
Step 5. Place the CD-R in your parents CD-ROM drive.
Step 6. Reboot the computer.
Step 7. Install Ubuntu by following on screen instructions.
Step 8. Reboot after installation is complete.
Step 9. Enjoy the fact that your parents will stop bugging you to fix their computer. Instead you’ll get calls from mom asking Linux questions – isn’t that awesome?
- Security The most obvious and important reason your parents should run Linux is the security the Linux operating system provides. While many of us tech-savvy computer users have little to no problems surfing the web and staying connected 24/7 without running into viruses and spyware, it’s almost inevitable for a non-savvy Internet user [read: majority of moms and dads] to stumble across a virus or malware on a website or in an e-mail. Linux is well known for the safety and security of browsing the web without the worry of the popular viruses that plague a good portion of the Internet. The main reason being that virus and malware developers stick to Windows due to its popularity and worldwide reach.
- Cost Why should your parents have to pay money for an operating system and additional applications when there are hundreds of Linux alternatives that can do the same things they probably need for absolutely free? The GNU General Public License (GPL) gives users the freedom to change and share free software. This is where GNU/Linux derives from. Mom and Dad shouldn’t have to fork out upwards of $300 just for the basics of an OS. Linux is free and widely available, it should be a no-brainer.
- Hardware One great aspect of Linux is that it works well with old hardware. Many times I’ll find that a lot of my friends parents have older model computers. They are brainwashed into thinking that in order to get off Windows 98, or Windows ME, they need to upgrade their whole system so they can install Vista. Linux works great on old machines – don’t even think about installing Vista on your Moms old 386, it just won’t work.
- Administration Administration of a Linux machine involves little to no work. If you chose to install Ubuntu Linux on your parents computer, they most administration they would have to do is click yes to install the updates when the Update Manager prompts them to. As an additional plus, for us savvy Linux users, if we needed to, we can open up SSH with a port forward and log into our parents computers remotely if needed. Additionally, I’ve had Linux computers that have literally sat turned on for years in a closet with very minimal administration. Linux just works.
- Dell You no longer can use the excuse that when you install Linux on your parents computer, it doesn’t work “out of the box”. With the semi-recent Dell and Canonical partnership you now have an option of buying a computer or laptop that comes pre-installed with Ubuntu Linux.
Alternatives to Mom & Dad’s Windows Applications
Below are a few alternatives to some common Windows applications that Mom and Dad may frequently use. For a more detailed list, see Alternatives to Windows Programs, Open Source Alternative, and The Linux Alternative Project.Windows: Internet Explorer

Why LINUX?
Why Linux?
There are a lot of people out there who use Windows, or Mac OSX, and aren’t generally very happy with their user experience, or want to try something new that doesn’t rely on either Apple or Microsoft. Linux offers users that chance, with multiple versions of its operating system – from Linux itself to Ubuntu – and has a wide range of benefits to boot.
If you’ve ever had to fork out for an OS upgrade, you’ll know that they’re usually not very cheap, and for the sake of playing games, working on documents for a presentation the following morning or just accessing www.o2.co.uk via a browser to pay a bill, it seems like an unworthy investment. But casual users don’t need to worry – Linux is completely free.
No, in all seriousness, it actually is free. So is all the software you’ll find in the Software Centre. One of the key principles of Linux users is that everything created for it specifically should be open-source, because this benefits the community, and not the individual. If one development team do it, the rest will, and it increases to the point where you can do anything from edit mp3 files to write a novel without paying anything at all.
It’s also extremely customizable, and that’s because all the code of the operating system is available to anyone. This means that coders who would prefer, say, an OSX-like “dock” instead of a taskbar can have one by using the code available and their own skills to create one (though it exists already – this is just an example). Even if you use a program rather than writing one, and find an error, you can join in with the dev team and offer them a solution, or report bugs in order to contribute to the community.
It’s not difficult to pick up, and there’s a lot to master, so the moment you find yourself in a bind with an operating system, give Linux a shot – after all, it’s not going to impact your ability to pay the rent, and you might just discover that open-source, community-powered operating systems are your ideal choice.

5 Reasons to Use Linux Operating Systems
Linux is an open-source operating system, meaning the people that
use it can change, develop, alter, improve and distribute it as they see
fit. What this also means is that there are a wide variety of different
Linux operating system options to choose from, some of which are
considered to be “standard” and some of which are not. Do you need some
reasons to consider using the Linux operating system?
Reason #1: Cost advantages. These are one of the most obvious advantages, because Linux is completely free to obtain, use and alter. Alternatively, Microsoft and Apple operating systems offer hefty and often recurring fees for use. You can only use a Microsoft operating system license one single time, but you can use Linux as often as you like for free.
Reason #2: Security advantages. The security aspect associated with Linux is significantly stronger in comparison to Windows. The Linux operating system has managed to remain secure despite the widespread transfer of viruses, adware and spyware.
Reason #3: Choice and freedom advantages. The power of choice is an important advantage. You can control nearly every single aspect of using the Linux operating system through the kernel and through Window Managers.
Reason #4: Software advantages. There are a wide variety of software choices that are available to you when it comes to using the Linux operating systems. For example, there are all kinds of interesting text editors, games and other software programs to try as you experiment with the operating system. You can get additional apps and useful software by downloading them with your wireless internet connection.
Reason #5: Hardware advantages. Linux is absolutely perfect for old computers that are lacking in terms of memory or processing power. Install Linux and use these computers for a wide variety of different purposes including as a file server, a firewall, a backup server or anything else you can think of as the possibilities are virtually endless.
Linux is an operating system well worth considering if these benefits appeal to your needs.

Is Realy Microft Dead?
“I liked Ultimate but I’m no loser
I paid for a Vista upgrade
but when my 3D shader failed to shade
I decided XP was the right call
You can’t blame me at all.”
Who killed Microsoft? Why did all those jobs get lost?
“Not I,” said the Netbook buyer.
“I just wanted something lighter.
Not my fault Atom was crap
and couldn’t run my Windows apps.
I installed Linux, yes it’s true,
but what was I supposed to do?
It wasn’t me who made it fall,
you can’t blame me at all.”
Who killed Microsoft? Why did all those jobs get lost?
“Not I,” said the Zune fanboy,
“I got Zune, I’m no iToy
Sure it didn’t do too much and
too bad my girlfriend bought a Touch
now we’re iTunes all the way
what else do I have to say?”
Who killed Microsoft? Why did all those jobs get lost?
“Not I,” said MSN,
“Just point your finger at them.
Look: Google does a better job,
we didn’t buy Yahoo! cause they’re clods
People want a good old fashioned engine
but we lost our parent a few million.
But it wasn’t us who made it fall,
you can’t blame us at all.”
Who killed Microsoft? Why did all those jobs get lost?
“It wasn’t me,” said Steve Ballmer.
“I’m no less fat but I’m much calmer.
Bill Gates told me he’d never leave
but now he’s gone just like Steve.
I’m trying I’m trying yes I confess,
but no one watched me at CES!”
Who killed Microsoft? Why did all those jobs get lost?
with apologies
